Genus of about single species of clump-forming, bulbous perennials from grassland to forest and cliffs in Africa. In spring plant the bulb firmly in a 5-7 in. pot, and leave the top half uncovered. Vallota is an easy plant - keep it cool during winter, remove dead flowers and leaves and let the compost dry out slightly between waterings. Clusters of flowers appear in late summer . Vallota Speciosa is excellent for a sunny windowsill. The leaves are evergreen and the red flowers are borne on 1-2 ft flower-stalks. There are white and salmon varietis.
Average warmth in summer - minimum 50-55 F in winter. Brightly lit spot with some direct sunlight.
Water thoroughly when the compost begins to dry out. Reduce watering in winter. Use soft, tepid water. Sponge leaves occasionally.
Divide plants at repotting time, or detach offsets from mature plants and pot up in summer. Sow seed at 55-64 F (13-18 C) when ripe.
